How big house do you want to build?
The most important thing is that you think long-term and look at your needs both now and in five, ten years. As the family grows, the practical need also grows, not least when it comes to surface and storage space. When you suddenly stand there with the teenagers who are sports and driving mopeds you may regret that you did not build larger garages and larger laundry facilities. The size of the house also depends on how large a plot you have and how large you can and can build. The size of a lot is very different, and if you need a garage, you may not have the space to build a large single-storey villa, but have to think about a two-story villa instead.

What does the plot look like? Are there views you want to see as much as possible of? How’s the sun’s location? You want to have sun on the veranda and place the bedroom to the north to avoid baking nights during the summer. Many would like to have the kitchen in the south facing position to make it as light and lovely as possible. It can also be an added advantage to utilize the solar heat by adding large window surfaces to the south.
But you also need to think about practical things like heating, water and electricity and broadband – these are things that can pull away in cost. Need water, electricity and broadband to go long distances? And the current heating – air heat pump may be cheaper than geothermal heat, while geothermal heat is a much more secure source of energy. Review what options you have and which ones are best for you.
