Above ground pool are usually made of kits that come in large boxes and spend a lot of money. There is a cheaper way to install a small pond on the ground than to buy an expensive steel-framed model that will eventually rust – even if it’s galvanized to start. Another problem with above-ground ponds made from kits is that sanitation and filtration systems are almost always below standard because most of the money is allocated for steel frames and not for pool water treatment. A simple above ground pool can be constructed in various forms using a 150 mm concrete block from your local builder and waterproof with a PVC coating and equipped with a water treatment system that is truly functional and ensures that children can use the pool without getting sick.
Above ground pool like that can be square, round or octagonal. If the wall is about 4 feet or 1.2 meters high, the water depth can reach 40 inches or about 1.0m. Concrete block walls will hold this water level if they are supported externally by further concrete support built at 2-meter intervals around the edge of the pond. This support only needs 40 inches or about 1 meter wide and must always be built at the right angle (on the plan) to the main pool wall. The beauty of this structural system is that the support can be used to support wooden decking around the pool perimeter. The pool walls and supporting walls will need the right concrete foundation and this must be at least 16 inches or 400 mm wide and carried down through the topsoil to fairly hard ground.

The foundation must be at least 6 inches or 150mm thick. They can step if the pool is not built on the site level. Swimming pools can also be set to the ground if needed to reduce visual obtrusively. The side of the internal water facing the wall of the concrete block must be tapered so that the poolside is smooth. Ponds above ground do not lose heat received from the sun very quickly at night and to counteract this effect, polystyrene panels can be attached to the face of the inside of the pool wall. The amateur brick coating can build one of these pools quickly and easily but care needs to be taken to ensure the structural integrity of the walls and may be easier and faster to get a professional involved. A skimmer and three water holes that can be purchased from a local pool store also need to be installed through the pool wall. The skimmer must be installed so as to maintain the design water level.
